How we pick books

The test is in the name: is this a book children ask for again, and can the adult stand it? We lean heavily on books that have lasted, because being asked for again by a generation of kids is the best evidence there is. There are 27 books so far. We add slowly, because a long list would defeat the point.

One book, marked with a disclosure, is one we have a personal connection to. It is placed high in our lists for that reason, and it has no Re-Read score. Nobody pays to be on this list, and there are no affiliate links on the site at the moment. If that changes, we will say so here and on the links themselves.

What the numbers mean

The Re-Read score and the scare rating are our opinions. The read-aloud times are our estimates for a calm bedtime pace. None of them come from a survey or from measuring a panel of families, and we will tell you if that ever changes. Reviews are written with the help of AI tools. There are no customer reviews on this site.
