Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

Often a child's first experience of "reading", because they have it memorised before they know what letters are.

Why they ask for it again

Toddlers can say it with you by the third go. Feeling like a reader is the strongest pull there is at this age.

Our review

The question passes from animal to animal: a red bird, a yellow duck, a blue horse, a purple cat. The rhythm is a call and response, and it asks nothing of the child except to join in, which is exactly why they do.

Eric Carle's tissue-paper collage makes each animal look like a poster, big and flat and readable from across a room. Teachers have used it for decades, for good reason: it teaches colour, sequence and prediction without ever feeling like a lesson.

How to read it aloud

Leave the animal's name off and let them shout it, once they know it. Then use the book as a call-and-response and stop reading the words yourself.

The catch

There is no story to speak of. Older siblings will ask why you are doing this.

Is it scary?

Nothing scary. It is a very friendly bear.
