The Book With No Pictures
A book whose only rule is that the grown-up must say everything on the page. The grown-up has made a terrible mistake.
Why they ask for it again
They get to hear an adult forced to say ridiculous words against their will. Kids find this the funniest thing that has ever happened.
Our review
There are no pictures, as promised, only type. But the rule is that whoever is reading must say every word, and those words include "BLORK" and a confession that you are a monkey who taught yourself to read. The child watches you lose all your dignity, page after page.
What looks like a gimmick is actually a smart piece of literacy. It teaches a child that the words on a page have real power, enough to make a grown-up say anything. Kids who have told you they hate books will often ask for this one again.
How to read it aloud
Protest constantly. "I don't want to say this!" is the role. Your kid has to believe you are being forced to read it.
The catch
It only works as a performance, so it is best for an adult with energy left. It is not a wind-down book.
Is it scary?
Nothing scary. Mild bottom humour.
