The Again List / Ages 0 to 2

Goodnight Moon

A book that works less like a story and more like a dimmer switch.

Why they ask for it again

Saying goodnight to everything in the room is a ritual a toddler can actually control, and toddlers will defend a ritual with their lives.

Our review

Almost nothing happens. A small rabbit says goodnight to the objects in a green room, and that is the entire plot. But the light in the room dims from page to page, the clocks move on, and the words get quieter, so the book physically winds down around the child.

There is a little mouse hiding on every colour spread, which is how you keep an alert toddler busy until the sedation kicks in. And there is one blank page reading "Goodnight nobody", which adults have been quietly unsettled by for nearly eighty years.

How to read it aloud

Read each page a little slower and quieter than the last. By "Goodnight noises everywhere" you should barely be making a sound.

The catch

If you find it dull, you are not wrong. It was not written for you.

Is it scary?

Nothing scary at all. The "quiet old lady" is a rabbit in a rocking chair.
